Canning supplies are incredibly useful for home preservation, whether you’re using them for water bath canning, steam canning or pressure canning. Tattler reusable canning lids are two-piece plastic lids for mason-type preserving jars. Bernardin makes tall, slim-line wide-mouth mason jars with a capacity of 750 ml / ¾ litre / ¾ US quart.
It means higher quality canned produce, but the reasoning is more about safety than quality. These aren’t specifically canning supplies, but if you’re into home canning they can make preparing the food a lot easier. I have the 30 quart model, and it’s a good middle ground. I specifically got it because it allows you to stack two levels of jars for canning, but it’s not so absurdly large as the 41.5 quart model. High pectin fruits don’t tend to work well, and it only works for small batches. Pressure canning isn’t for everyone, and I know many people are intimidated by the though of preserving low acid meats and vegetables at home. Still, if you’re able to take the leap it’ll open up a whole world of food preservation options, and allow you to put up just about everything in the garden. This is simply a grabber that allows you to remove the hot jars from boiling water without burning yourself. It’s inexpensive, and I think they’re absolutely necessary. You could also use something like these silicone trivets.

Most water bath canners come with a wire rack but you can also purchase one separately if needed. It’s best to have a mix of both wide and regular mouth jars and pick the best jar for the individual project. Wide mouth jars, as their name implies have a big opening and they’re perfect for food that can get messy when trying to “force” into a jar like when you’re Canning Peaches. You can tell a regular mouth jar from their wide mouth friends because the opening is smaller but also because the neck narrows and it looks like the jar almost has little shoulders. I love to use it when making Low-Sugar Strawberry Jam because it makes measuring the fruit a no-brainer and makes mashed fruit pourable. I have loads of stainless steel nesting bowls that I have acquired over the years from thrift stores, family members, and garage sales. Some canning projects won’t require more than one bowl, but others will have you rinsing, straining, and mashing in multiple bowls.
