Dave Henderson World Series Stats by Baseball Almanac

His time with Oakland included the only All-Star Game and the only World Series championship of his career. Lucas threw only one pitch — and it sailed up and in and hit Gedman on the right hand. As the Boston catcher trotted to first base, Mauch made another change, bringing in closer Donnie Moore to face Dave Henderson. When he swung and missed on a pitch low and away, Moore and the Angels were one strike away.

Henderson batted in the seventh inning and struck out, while the Angels added two more runs in their half of the seventh. The pitch...To left field, and deep, and Downing goes back, AND IT'S GONE! The Red Sox get four runs in the ninth on a pair of two-run homers by Don Baylor and Dave Henderson. —Al Michaels, ABC-TV Here's the pitch...there's a fly ball to left field...Downing is going back...back...back...IT'S GONE!

Summary of 197 Home Runs

After knocking Sutton out of the game in the seventh, the Sox picked up two more in the eighth to make it 3-0. The epic Game Five is the one everyone remembers most about this series, but Game Four was almost as good and gets my vote as the second best game of the series. Red Sox manager John McNamara, going with a three-man rotation for the series, brought Clemens back on three days rest and he went up against 300 game winner and future Hall of Famer Don Sutton.

In early September, he was recalled, with his first appearance back with the Mariners coming on September 3, in a 20-inning game against the Red Sox—one of the longest MLB games ever played. Henderson is best remembered for the two-out, two-strike home run he hit in the top of the ninth inning in Game 5 of the 1986 American League Championship Series. He helped his teams reach the World Series four times during his career—Boston in 1986 and Oakland from 1988 to 1990, with Oakland winning the championship in 1989. His uncle Joe Henderson appeared in 16 MLB games as a pitcher during the mid-1970s. Henderson is best remembered for a two-out, two-strike home run at the top of the ninth inning in Game 5 of the 1986 American League Championship Series.

The Red Sox suffered a crushing loss in Game Four and were down to their very last strike in Game Five and yet somehow they came back to win the series. Clemens looked like the pitcher who cruised in Game Four and not the one who was overexcited and overthrew in Game One. He handled the Angels with ease whereas the Red Sox hitters could smell blood when it came to Angels starter John Candelaria. After the Red Sox dominated in Game Six, the final game of the series featured two teams heading in opposite directions. Even though Gene Mauch spoke with confidence in the pregame interview, his Angels team looked like dead men walking when the game started. They’d also been playing without rookie sensation Wally Joyner since Game Three which couldn’t have made them feel better.

His first professional season was 1977 with the Bellingham Mariners of the Class A short season Northwest League, where he played in 65 games, batting .315 with 16 home runs and 63 runs batted in . DeCinces barehanded the ball on a bounce, but his throw was off target, and the bases were loaded. Henderson swung at Moore’s first pitch and flied to center — scoring Baylor and giving Boston a 7-6 lead. With his team’s backs to the wall, manager John McNamara gave the ball to Bruce Hurst, who had pitched a complete-game victory in Game Two.

It was enough to cause him to miss the final series of the regular season, but he was in the starting lineup for every game of the postseason. Moore made Henderson look foolish, getting two quick strikes on him while just missing on a couple of the following pitches. With a 2-2 count, Henderson fouled off the next two pitches and the crowd was on their feet and were loud. You could hear how loud and crazy they were even watching it all these years later. Henderson was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1977 Major League Baseball draft.

With the incredible and dramatic finish of Game Five, the last two games of this series often get forgotten. Even though the Red Sox were elated and the Angels deflated by the end of the last game, the series wasn’t over yet. The Angels only had to win one of the remaining two games while the Red Sox still needed to win both.

Henderson had entered the game earlier to replace the injured centerfielder Tony Armas. Meanwhile, this has to still be one of the worst defeats in Angels history. The shell-shocked looks of disbelief in the dugout as the Red Sox were celebrating after Calvin Schiraldi struck out the side in the ninth said it all, even thirty-four years later.

He was a member of the 1991 American League All-Star team and played in four World Series. During his 14 MLB seasons, Henderson appeared in 1538 games, batting .258 with 197 home runs and 708 RBIs. Defensively, he played 1,388 games in the outfield , with a .984 fielding percentage. While Oakland won the AL West , Henderson was left off of the postseason roster due to his injury. Henderson spent the final month of the 1987 season with San Francisco, where he appeared in 15 games, batting for a .238 average.

During the 1982 season, Henderson's playing time increased significantly, as he appeared in 104 games, with 85 complete games played . In 1983, his batting average improved to .269 with 17 home runs and 55 RBIs, while appearing in 137 games, with 124 of them being complete games in the outfield . Henderson spent some of the 1984 season on the disabled list because of a hamstring injury. Still, he hit well, batting .280 with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs in 112 games played with 78 complete games in the outfield .

Moore’s next pitch was a split finger fastball that didn’t dive as much as he wanted it to. Henderson swung and hit the ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer that improbably gave the Red Sox a 6-5 lead while stunning and silencing the crowd. Watching all these years later and even knowing what happened, this was still an incredibly dramatic, pulse-pounding moment. What’s been lost to the mists of time is that it was almost all for naught. After Rice struck out looking, Witt looked set finish the game and pitch the Angels into the World Series.

Henderson received consideration during AL MVP voting and finished 13th, with the award going to his Athletics teammate Jose Canseco. Entering the 1981 season, Henderson was named the Mariners' starting center fielder on Opening Day, going hitless in four at bats. His first MLB hit came several games into the season—a home run against Oakland pitcher Steve McCatty, after Henderson had been hitless in his first nine major league plate appearances.

He is survived by his sons, Chase and Trent, his wife Nancy and his first wife Lori. “It’s a shock, just out of nowhere,” said Dennis Eckersley, Hall of Fame relief pitcher on those teams. Lux stood with his mouth closed to first base, unable to believe that the baseball was left in the park. Your favorite teams, topics, and players all on your favorite mobile devices. Gedman drove the first run in with a groundout and then, after loading the bases again, Boggs hit a line drive that hit the second base bag and caromed into right field to bring in two more. It just seemed like everything was going right for the Red Sox and horrifically wrong for the Angels.

Hitters stayed in the box, pitchers stayed on the mound, and both teams just got on with the game. Because of that, the five nine-inning games in this series took an average of around two and a half hours. Even the two extra inning games in this series barely surpassed the three hour mark. It was also nice to see several nearly extinct baseball things like contact hitters, bunting to move runners over, hit and runs, and other elements of the game that are sorely missing in 2020.
